PRE-PURCHASE EXAMINATIONS
We strongly recommend that all horses being purchased undergo a pre-purchase by an equine veterinarian. We make many visits to horses that have been recently purchased without the benefit of a vet –check. No matter what price you pay no –one wants to own a lame horse or find out its temperament is not what you thought. The cost of a pre-purchase examination is nothing compared to disappointment upon discovering your new horse has a significant problem, not to mention the cost involved in trying to treat or fix somebody else’s problem.
One of the vets Dr Gillian Rickard who competed for Australia in Dressage at World Equestrian Games and is now FEI accredited and a Level 3 Dressage Coach is in the unique position not only to offer a veterinary opinion but also a expert opinion on the selection of a competitive performance horse.
In our standard pre – purchase examination all the body systems are thoroughly assessed, it takes approximately 1 1/2  hours to perform the examination  and a written report is provided. Soundness is checked in the lead at walk and trot and on the lunge which includes canter in both directions. Flexion tests are performed on all the joints in the limbs. Hoof tester reaction is also checked.
Abnormal findings are discussed and there likely impact for the buyer with respect to the intended use of the horse. Further assessment can be done with xrays, endoscope, ultrasound and blood tests which give a more accurate insight into the horses health and soundness thus allowing a more educated judgement of the horses suitability.
